Mu'in al-Din Chishti

Mu'in al-Din Chishti
(1114-1236)
The founder of the Chishti Sufic order in India, Mun'i al-Din Chishti was born in the Persian province of Sistan. Growing up, he traveled widely in Persia, Iraq, and Central Asia and studied with the well-known religious teachers of his time, including Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (1077-1166) and Shaikh Najm al-Din Kubra (1145-1228). He came to India and es-tablished his hospice at Ajmer toward the end of Prithviraja Cha-hamana's reign (1180-1192). During his stay at Ajmer, Mu'in al-Din disseminated his mystic ideas couched in a deeply humane language, which earned him the veneration and respect of the common people, including many non-Muslims. After his death in 1236, his mystic mission was carried on in the Ajmer tract by his disciple Shaikh Hamid al-Din Nagauri, while outside Ajmer it was carried on by Qutb al-Din Bakhtiyar Kaki (d. 1235) and the latter's disciple, Farid al-Din Mas'ud Ganj-shikar (1175-1265).
